Recommended Questions to Ask at Parent-Teacher Conferences

By New York City Department of Education Staff

Parent-teacher conferences are held twice a year. The conferences are a great opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher(s) and find out how your child is doing. The conferences also are a good time to ask questions and share ideas about your child’s skills and progress.

Here are some suggested questions for parent-teacher conferences:

  • What are some of the good things my child does in class?
  • In what subjects does my child do well? In what subjects does he/she need extra support?
  • How well does my child get along with other kids? Is my child respectful toward you and other school staff?
  • How do you grade your students?
  • What things can I do at home to support my child’s learning?
  • How much homework help should I give?
  • How much time should my child spend on homework every night?
  • How can I learn more about the curriculum?
  • What books do you recommend that I read with my child?
  • Are there ways that I can help you in the classroom?
