Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City is among New York’s oldest and most successful youth service organizations, providing adult mentors to thousands of young people growing up in single parent homes across the city.

Learning Leaders, a nonprofit celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, recruits, trains, and supports volunteers (79% of whom are parents) to serve in NYC public schools as tutors, college counselors, and more. With 15,000 active volunteers, Learning Leaders reaches over 20% of public school children in more than half of all city schools.

Since 1983, the Department of Education’s New York City Mentoring Program has helped many businesses, organizations, and government agencies partner with public high schools throughout New York City. Participating partners must have a minimum of 15-20 employees interested in mentoring youth on a one-to-one basis. The mentors support students in academics, social development, career exploration, and cultural awareness.

One of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the impact it has on children’s education. Operation Backpack is Volunteers of America’s annual back-to-school drive that asks the general public to collect and bring backpacks to designated drop locations throughout the city. The business community participates by becoming Operation Backpack sponsors and engaging their employees in backpack and school supply drives. In addition to giving the children a sense of confidence and hope, Operation Backpack relieves the children’s families of a significant financial burden and helps them look like all the other children who are beginning the school year with a brand new backpack.

PENCIL (Public Education Needs Civic Involvement In Learning) works to improve student achievement in public schools throughout the five boroughs by leveraging the expertise and resources of New York City’s business community. PENCIL’s school-business partnership program, launched each fall at its Principal For A Day recruitment event, matches hundreds of business leaders with principals every year to collaborate on a variety of long-term initiatives designed to address the individual needs of each school.

Publicolor is an innovative program that engages high risk students in their education by involving them in transforming the public spaces of neglected schools and neighborhood facilities through the power of vibrant color and organized collaboration. Publicolor volunteers paint alongside students in hallways, stairwells, and cafeterias. Publicolor also seeks mentors for their college students to ensure that these students stay in school and graduate.
